Pedestrian and Vehicle Barriers

We work with customers in manufacturing and warehousing to provide pedestrian and vehicle barriers for internal and external environments. We supply and install a wide range of barriers in both steel or plastic, all of which are compliant with the relevant regulations.

From traffic barriers to building protection, we are experienced in designing, sourcing and installing the optimum barrier solutions to ensure workplace safety and building protection in a wide range of facilities and industries.

What are Pedestrian and Vehicle Barriers and how are they deployed?

In modern industrial facilities and warehouses, barriers serve the function of both protecting pedestrians and buildings from vehicles and mechanical handling equipment, keeping the former safe and the latter undamaged.

Barriers can be supplied in either polymer or mild/stainless steel to suit the environment. Polymer barrier protection is proving a more popular choice than steel due to its flexible properties on , returning to its original shape after impact, minimising damage to both barrier and vehicle. Also ongoing maintenance of polymer barriers is virtually zero in comparison with steel which may require repainting and repair over time. Steel barriers are also available if there is a need or preference.

Wherever vehicles such as forklift trucks, autonomous guided vehicles (AGVs) and autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) are used, barriers help keep vehicle and pedestrian traffic apart, reducing the risk of collisions involving people

Types of Pedestrian and Vehicle Barriers

Listed below are the principle types of pedestrian and machine barrier used in warehousing and manufacturing operations.

Pedestrian and Traffic Barriers

The pedestrian barriers we supply provide a highly visible, durable separation between foot traffic and vehicle routes, helping to prevent accidents and reduce maintenance costs. They are often used to segregate walkways from vehicle routes and serve to prevent pedestrians from straying into the path of vehicles.

Key features and benefits

  • Polymer barriers are both flexible and robust, minimising damage whilst ensuring protection. They are corrosion‑resistant, requiring no repainting and withstand harsh indoor and outdoor conditions.
  • Cost-effective modular barrier solutions are based on post and rail systems
  • Cold‑storage variants: Maintain flexibility and strength in sub‑zero temperatures, ideal for refrigerated facilities.
  • Integrated signage and accessory compatibility: Signposts, slider plates or safety notices can all be added to customise barriers to meet customers’ specific needs.

olymer-based column protectors serve to protect vertical structures from vehicle impacts, absorbing and dissipating collision forces, so minimising damage to both columns and vehicles.

Key features and benefits

  • Advanced energy‑absorption flexing on impact and returning to shape, reducing repair costs and downtime.
  • Weatherproof, corrosion‑free finish, eliminating the need for repainting
  • Modular, customisable design, adaptable to any column size or shape, simplifying installation and future reconfiguration.
  • Sustainable compliance – column protectors are manufactured from fully recyclable materials and tested to PAS 13 standards. These products offer a lower‑carbon, certified solution for modern warehouses and production facilities

Bollards create a clear, impact‑resistant boundary to protect building entrances and exits from both head on collisions and side-long scraping. Polymer bollards absorb and deflect impacts, flexing back to shape, while steel bollards provide a high‑strength solution when this is required. Both type of bollard offer corrosion and UV‑resistance, are quick to install and compliant with PAS 13 standards.

Key features and benefits

  • Polythene bollards deflect and cushion impacts to reduce repair costs and downtime.
  • High visibility with bright finishes (yellow/black or RAL 1021) ensuring visibility in busy areas.
  • Versatile configurations are possible with multiple diameters, heights and mounting options to suit a variety of situations.
  • Low maintenance: Durable materials resist weather, chemicals and cold‑store conditions without repainting.

Safety gates provide controlled access within barrier systems, using energy‑absorbing swing or slide designs that self‑close and integrate seamlessly with existing rails or partitions. They deflect impacts and reset automatically, maintaining continuous protection and comply with PAS 13 standards. Usually modular, they are a cost-effective and easily to install enhancement to pedestrian barriers.

Key features and benefits

  • Self‑closing action ensures gates return to a closed position, so reducing misuse and preserving barrier continuity.
  • Polymer-based gates absorb impact and so deflect collision, minimising repairs and downtime.
  • High‑visibility finishes and signage enhances awareness at crossing points.
  • Modular, adjustable installation to suit multiple configurations.

Rack protection systems safeguard warehouse racking from forklift and pallet collisions by combining energy‑absorbing polymer guardrails with robust steel uprights.

Key features and benefits

  • Energy‑absorbing impact defence: Rack damage is minimised through the use of polyethene elements which flex and rebound, whilst steel uprights redirect forces, minimising rack damage.
  • Corrosion‑ and UV‑resistant finishes means materials maintain visibility without repainting.
  • Modular, fit‑for‑purpose design with racking available in multiple heights, lengths and profiles to suit all rack configurations.

    The Process

We work with our customers to review their needs and provide appropriate and effective solutions. Often, barrier systems can be fitted as part of a comprehensive upgrade of the safety solutions across a facility. Sometimes however, customers come to us with a simple requirement to replace or provide a new pedestrian barrier or building protection. We source our barrier products from leading safety equipment suppliers. All such solutions are modular and can be customised to meet the needs of the customer.

    Experience Across Sectors

Our customers span a broad range of sectors, from heavy industry to manufacturing, warehousing to transportation, such as airports. We’ve supplied barrier solutions over many years to businesses across the UK and Ireland.

    Compliance

    Key regulations and guidelines

    • BSI PAS 13:2017 – The principal Code of Practice for safety barriers used in workplace traffic management, specifying impact‑resilience test methods and performance criteria
    • Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) 1998 – Requires that barriers, gates, bollards and protectors are suitable for their intended use.
    • HSE INDG199 “Workplace transport safety” guidance – Recommends physical barriers and traffic management measures to segregate pedestrians and vehicles, minimising collision risks
